How to turn the throttle on or off on an Aventon e-bike
US Aventons have a thumb throttle that works in any PAS level. On 2022+ models the app can disable it (class 1). EU models have no throttle.
Step by step
- Aventon app: connect to the bike > Settings > 'Throttle' > toggle off. The bike becomes pedal-assist only.
- Toggle it back on the same way; the display shows a throttle icon when enabled.
- Older models without the app toggle: the throttle cannot be disabled in a menu. Unplug the 3-pin throttle connector at the handlebar if you need to.
- Throttle only works with the display on and brake levers released; in class 3 mode it stops at 20 mph.
- Throttle in PAS 0: allowed on all Aventon class-2 models.
Tip: Disable the throttle for a child or new rider; it is the most common cause of a first-ride crash.
Can't find it?
If the app has no 'Throttle' entry, your bike's firmware predates it; update the bike firmware from the app first.
Frequently asked
Throttle does nothing.
Check the display is on, both brake sensors are released (adjust the lever free play), and the throttle plug is seated.
Is a throttle legal in Europe?
No; above 6 km/h it makes the bike a moped. Aventon EU bikes ship without it.
Does throttle riding use more battery?
Yes; throttle-only riding halves the range compared to PAS 2.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
