How to change the brightness of the Aventon colour display
Brightness is under Display Setting; five levels or Auto on newer firmware.
Step by step
- With the display on and the bike stationary, press and hold the '+' and '-' buttons together for about 2 seconds to open Settings.
- Select 'Display Setting' > 'Brightness'.
- Use '+'/'-' to choose 1 to 5 (or 'Auto').
- Confirm and exit.
- Original monochrome display: hold power twice to enter settings, then 'bL' 1 to 3.
Tip: Set 5 for daylight; the colour display is hard to read in sun at 3 or lower.
Can't find it?
If brightness is missing, the entry is called 'Backlight' on older firmware.
Frequently asked
Auto brightness is always dark.
The light sensor is behind the display glass; a mounted phone shading it makes it think it is night.
Can I switch the display off while riding?
No; the controller needs it on.
Does brightness affect range?
Negligibly.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
