How to switch an Aventon between class 2 (20 mph) and class 3 (28 mph) and the legal notes

Aventon colour display (Level, Pace, Aventure, Soltera) + Aventon app

Many Aventons (Level, Level.2, Pace 500, Aventure, Aventure.2, Soltera) ship as class 2 with a 20 mph cut-off and can be set to class 3 (28 mph pedal-assist) in the display or app. EU versions are locked at 25 km/h.

Step by step

  1. Aventon app (recommended): connect to the bike > Settings > 'Speed limit' or 'Class' > choose 'Class 2 (20 mph)' or 'Class 3 (28 mph)'. Accept the legal notice.
  2. On the display: With the display on and the bike stationary, press and hold the '+' and '-' buttons together for about 2 seconds to open Settings. Then 'Bike Setting' > 'Speed Limit' (may need password 8888) > set 20 or 28 mph.
  3. Confirm and exit; ride to check the cut-off.
  4. In class 3 the throttle is limited to 20 mph by firmware; pedal assist continues to 28 mph.
  5. EU bikes: the entry shows 25 km/h and cannot be raised.
  6. Check local rules: several US states and many trails restrict class 3 to riders 16+ with helmet, and ban them from bike paths.
Tip: Pace 350 and Soltera are class 2 only; the class-3 option is absent and cannot be unlocked.

Can't find it?

If 'Speed limit' is missing in the app, update the app and the bike firmware; the toggle moved into the app in 2022.

Frequently asked

Can I set my EU Aventon to 28 mph?

The firmware blocks it. Even if a workaround exists, the bike becomes an unregistered moped in the EU and UK.

The bike cuts out at 20 mph in class 3.

That is the throttle limit; keep pedalling and assist continues. If pedal assist also stops at 20, the class setting did not save; reconnect and retry.

Does class 3 void the warranty?

No, it is an official setting.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
