Where the speed limit is on a Bafang DP C18 / DP C07 and what is legal

Bafang DP C18 / DP C07 / DP C10 (BBS02, BBSHD, M-series)

The DP C18 shows the assist cut-off under Information → Speed Limit. Whether you can edit it depends on the firmware: OEM bikes lock it, aftermarket kits usually allow up to 40 km/h.

Step by step

  1. Switch the display on, then press and hold + and − together for about 2 seconds until the Setting menu appears (Display Setting / Information / Exit).
  2. Open Information.
  3. Scroll to Speed Limit and press power. If the number does not flash, the item is read-only on your firmware (see below).
  4. Where it is editable: press + or − to set the cut-off in km/h (or mph if you chose Imperial). Range on aftermarket firmware is typically 12–40 km/h.
  5. Confirm with power and leave the menu. The change is immediate.
  6. Check on a test ride that assist stops within about 1 km/h of the number you set.
Tip: Legal assist cut-off on public roads: EU and UK 25 km/h (15.5 mph) with a 250 W nominal motor; USA 20 mph for Class 1 and 2, 28 mph pedal-assist only for Class 3 (state rules vary). Raising the limit above that turns the bike into an unregistered moped: no insurance cover in a crash, police can confiscate it, and the motor warranty is void. Keep the higher setting for private land only.

Can't find it?

On a BBS02/BBSHD the controller also has its own limit set with the programming cable; the lower of the two applies. If the display shows 40 but assist stops at 25, the controller is the limiter. Some OEM firmware asks for the service code 8018 before it lets you edit the value; if 8018 is rejected, that bike is locked for good on the handlebar.

Frequently asked

Why is Speed Limit greyed out?

The bike manufacturer locked it to stay type-compliant. Only the Bafang BESST dealer tool can change it, and a dealer will not do it for road use.

What is the legal limit in the UK?

15.5 mph (25 km/h) assist cut-off and 250 W nominal motor. Anything above that is a motorcycle in law and needs registration, MOT-exempt but insurance and licence.

Will the police notice a 32 km/h setting?

Several EU countries now use roller test benches at roadside checks; Netherlands and Germany fine and confiscate. It is your risk.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
