How to change the number of assist levels (MAX PAS) on a Bafang DP C18 / DP C07

Bafang DP C18 / DP C07 / DP C10 (BBS02, BBSHD, M-series)

The DP C18 lets you pick 3, 5 or 9 assist levels in Display Setting → Max PAS. The power per level is decided by the controller, so this only changes how the levels are divided.

Step by step

  1. Switch the display on, then press and hold + and − together for about 2 seconds until the Setting menu appears (Display Setting / Information / Exit).
  2. Open Display Setting.
  3. Scroll to Max PAS (some firmware: 'PAS Level' or 'Assist Mode') and press power.
  4. Press + or − to choose 3, 5 or 9 and confirm with power.
  5. Exit the menu. The riding screen now steps through 0…3, 0…5 or 0…9 with the + and − buttons.
  6. Test: press + repeatedly; the highest number you reach should match your choice.
Tip: On a BBS02 or BBSHD the controller's 9-level table (current % and speed % per level) is what actually gives the power; choosing 5 levels on the display just uses every second entry of that table. Most riders find 5 levels the sweet spot between fine control and button pressing.

Can't find it?

If Max PAS is missing, the OEM has fixed it in the firmware. A DP C18 bought as a spare part always has it. Level 0 (no assist) is always available; it is not counted in the 3/5/9 figure.

Frequently asked

Does 9 levels give more top power than 5?

No. Level 9 of 9 and level 5 of 5 both call the controller's maximum. More levels only means finer steps in between.

Can I make level 1 weaker?

Not from the display. The per-level current and speed percentages are controller parameters, changed with the Bafang programming cable and configuration software.

Why does the bike always start in level 1?

Bafang displays remember the last level on most firmware; if yours always returns to 1 it is an OEM firmware choice and cannot be changed on the handlebar.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
