How walk assist works on a Bafang DP C18 / DP C07 / DP C10

Bafang DP C18 / DP C07 / DP C10 (BBS02, BBSHD, M-series)

Walk assist drives the bike at about 6 km/h (3.7 mph) while you hold the − button. It is a controller function; the display only sends the command.

Step by step

  1. Switch the display on and select any assist level (walk works from level 0 too on most firmware).
  2. Stand beside the bike, hold the bars and press and hold − for about 2 seconds.
  3. The display shows a walking-person icon (or 'P' on older DP C07) and the motor pulls the bike gently.
  4. Keep − held. The moment you release, the motor stops.
  5. To stop early, just let go or pull a brake lever (brake sensors cut the motor).
Tip: On a BBSHD the walk assist is strong enough to push the bike up a loading ramp, but the chain must be on a small gear: it drives through the chain like pedalling. In a big gear the motor will stall and throw error 30/21-style codes.

Can't find it?

If nothing happens: OEM firmware sometimes disables walk mode, or the bike has a brake sensor stuck closed (display shows a brake icon). If the bike shoots forward faster than walking pace, the controller's walk speed parameter was raised; that is illegal in the EU (6 km/h max).

Frequently asked

Is walk assist legal?

Yes. EU/UK pedelec rules allow motor drive without pedalling up to 6 km/h; it is the one throttle-like function every legal e-bike may have.

Can I make walk assist faster?

Not from the display, and not legally in Europe. Some controller software allows it; leave it at 6 km/h.

Walk assist stops after a few seconds?

You are letting the button move; press it firmly and keep steady pressure. A worn − button on the DP C07 button pad is a common cause.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
