Update firmware on a Shimano STEPS SC-E6100, SC-E7000 or SC-E8000 system
The display, drive unit and battery each run their own firmware. Since 2021 you can update most of them from E-TUBE Project on your phone; earlier, or with an older app version, updates needed a dealer with the SM-PCE02 cable.
Step by step
- Charge the battery to at least 50 % and connect the phone to E-TUBE Project (see the pairing guide).
- Open [Firmware update]. The app lists every unit and shows which has a newer version.
- Tap update and keep the phone within a metre. A drive-unit update takes 5-15 minutes; do not switch the bike off.
- When the app says finished, switch the bike off and on. Check units, clock and assist settings; some updates reset them.
- If a unit is greyed out with 'update at dealer', that component can only be flashed over the wired connection.
Can't find it?
Update fails at the same percentage every time: try a different phone, switch off other Bluetooth devices nearby, and disable battery saver for the app. If it still fails, a dealer's wired update is the safe route.
Frequently asked
Is a firmware update free?
Through the app, yes. Dealers may charge labour for a wired update.
Can a firmware update unlock more speed?
No. Region and speed limit are set in the drive unit and are not changed by updates.
The bike went dead halfway through an update.
Switch off, wait a minute, switch on and reconnect. The app resumes or restarts the update. If the display stays blank, a dealer can recover it over the wired connection.
