Adjust backlight brightness on a Shimano STEPS SC-E6100, SC-E7000 or SC-E8000
Brightness has five steps in the settings menu. The display also dims automatically at night when the lights are on.
Step by step
- Stop the bike and switch the system on. Press and hold the assist switch's X (down) and Y (up) buttons at the same time until the [Setting] menu appears. On an SC-E6100 without a switch you can also hold the display's own function button.
- Scroll with the X and Y buttons; confirm with the A (function/light) button.
- Scroll to [Brightness] and press A.
- Set 1 (dim) to 5 (brightest) with X and Y, press A.
- If the text is hard to read in sun, also try [Font colour] (white on black vs black on white).
- Scroll to [Exit] and press A.
Tip: Set brightness 3 and use the font colour switch instead of maximum brightness; it reads better in sunlight and saves a little battery.
Can't find it?
No [Brightness] item: on some firmware versions it is inside [Adjust]. If the display is dim regardless of setting, the backlight is failing and the display needs replacement.
Frequently asked
The display goes dark for a second when the motor starts.
That is a voltage dip from a weak or cold battery, not a brightness setting. Check battery health.
Does the display dim automatically?
Yes, when the lights are on it uses the night setting. Set [Brightness] with the lights on to adjust that level.
Can I turn the backlight off completely?
No. Level 1 is the minimum.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
