How to change the speed limit on a Ride1Up (class 2 20 mph / class 3 28 mph) and legal notes

Ride1Up displays (Turbo, Roadster, 700 series)

Most US Ride1Ups ship as class 3 (28 mph pedal-assist, throttle to 20 mph) and can be lowered to class 2 or class 1 in the display. The setting is in the advanced menu.

Step by step

  1. With the display on and the bike stationary, press and hold '+' and '-' together for about 2 seconds to open the settings menu.
  2. Enter the advanced menu (password 1919 or 0512).
  3. Find 'Speed limit' / 'LS' / P3 and set 20 (class 2) or 28 mph (class 3). Values above 28 are illegal.
  4. Confirm and exit. Test-ride.
  5. The throttle stops at 20 mph regardless of the pedal-assist limit on 2022+ firmware.
  6. Legal notes: class 3 needs 16+ and a helmet in many US states and is banned from many bike paths. In the EU / UK the limit is 25 km/h; set it to 25 with metric units if you import a bike.
Tip: Ride1Up documents the class-3 setting; the frame sticker says class 3 on most models, so lowering it does not create a labelling issue.

Can't find it?

If the entry is greyed out, the display is the locked 2024+ version; a Ride1Up support ticket can supply a display firmware with the change.

Frequently asked

Can I go above 28 mph?

Some firmware accepts it; the bike is then a moped in every jurisdiction and the motor overheats on long runs.

Why does assist cut at 20 mph on my 700?

The limit was set to 20; raise it to 28 if class 3 is legal where you ride.

Is the Roadster class 3?

Yes, 24 mph pedal-assist, no throttle.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
