How to turn the throttle on or off on a Rad Power Bike and the class-2 / class-3 rules
Most US Rad bikes have a twist or thumb throttle that works in any PAS level, including 0. EU bikes ship without a throttle or with a 6 km/h walk throttle. Disabling it is possible in the Rad app on 2023+ models, or by unplugging it on older ones.
Step by step
- 2023+ models (RadRunner 3 Plus, RadCity 5 Plus, Radster, RadRover 6 Plus with app): open the Rad app > Settings > 'Throttle' > toggle off. The bike becomes class 1 (pedal assist only).
- Older models with the classic LCD: there is no menu option. To disable, unplug the throttle connector on the handlebar (yellow 3-pin under the grip). The bike rides normally on PAS.
- To enable a throttle that does nothing: check PAS level is not 0 with a 2019 firmware that blocks throttle in level 0 (set level 1), and that the brake levers are fully released.
- Half-twist throttles wear the return spring; if the throttle sticks, replace it rather than riding with it.
- In the EU: a full-speed throttle makes the bike a moped. Rad EU models use a 6 km/h walk throttle only; do not fit a US throttle.
Can't find it?
No 'Throttle' toggle in the Rad app means your bike's controller is the older generation; the app cannot switch it. Unplugging is the only way.
Frequently asked
Is throttle-only riding legal in the US?
Class 2 bikes may use throttle up to 20 mph in most states; some cities ban class 2 on certain paths. Class 3 (28 mph) must be pedal-assist only above 20 mph.
Why does my throttle stop working at 20 mph?
That is the class-2 limit. Pedal assist continues to the set limit on class-3 bikes.
Can I fit a throttle to my EU Rad?
The controller supports it, but it is illegal on public roads in the EU and UK.
