How to check or change the assist speed limit on a Rad Power Bikes LCD (class 1/2/3)

Rad Power Bikes LCD display (RadRover, RadCity, RadRunner, RadWagon)

Rad bikes ship as class 2 (20 mph / 32 km/h with throttle) in the US and as 25 km/h pedelecs in the EU. The limit is set in the Advanced Settings on the older display; newer displays and the Rad app lock or expose it depending on model and market.

Step by step

  1. Turn the display on, then press and hold the Up and Down arrows together for about 2 seconds to open the Settings menu.
  2. Hold Up and Down again to enter Advanced Settings (password 0512).
  3. Press MODE until the speed-limit screen (a number, e.g. 20 or 32) appears.
  4. Up/Down changes the value. US bikes: legal maximum is 20 mph for class 2 with throttle, 28 mph for class 3 pedal-only. EU bikes: 25 km/h; anything higher is illegal on public roads.
  5. Hold MODE to save. Test-ride to confirm the cut-off.
  6. 2023+ models with the Rad app: Settings > 'Ride mode' > choose Class 1, 2 or 3 where offered. The RadRunner 3 Plus, RadCity 5 Plus and Radster allow class 3 (28 mph pedal-only) in the US; EU versions are locked.
Tip: Setting a US bike to 28 mph but leaving the throttle active makes it neither class 2 nor class 3; some states treat it as a moped. Rad's own app disables throttle above 20 mph when class 3 is selected.

Can't find it?

If the speed setting is greyed out or absent, the display is the 2022+ locked version; the only option is the Rad app where the model supports it.

Frequently asked

Can I raise my EU Rad to 32 km/h?

Technically often yes via the advanced menu; legally no. In the EU it becomes a speed pedelec / moped needing type approval, plate, insurance and helmet.

The bike cuts out at 15 mph.

Wheel size is set too large, or the limit was changed. Check both advanced settings.

Does the limit affect walk mode?

No, walk mode is fixed at 6 km/h.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
