How pedal assist levels work on a Rad Power Bikes LCD and how to change them
Rad bikes have PAS levels 0 to 5 (cadence-based on 2018 to 2022 models, torque-based on 2023+ 'Plus' models with the new display). Level is changed with the arrows; there is no customisation on the older display.
Step by step
- Turn the display on. The PAS level shows as a number 0 to 5 (or bars) on the right.
- Press Up to raise, Down to lower. Level 0 = no pedal assist (throttle still works on class-2 bikes).
- The bike remembers the last level on the older LCD; the newer LCD starts in level 1 every time.
- Cadence-sensor bikes: assist starts after about a quarter crank turn and delivers the same power regardless of how hard you pedal. Pedal lightly in a high level and the motor does the work.
- Torque-sensor bikes (2023+): assist scales with your pedal force; use higher levels for hills.
- Rad app (2023+ models only): Settings > 'Ride modes' lets you cap the top level for another rider.
Can't find it?
If the level will not change, the display is locked in the Settings menu; hold MODE to exit. If assist is absent in all levels, check the cadence sensor magnet ring on the crank is not shifted away from the sensor.
Frequently asked
Can I make level 1 stronger?
Not on the older display; the assist curve is fixed. The Rad app on 2023+ bikes only limits levels, it does not reshape them.
Assist kicks in late and cuts out late.
Normal for cadence sensors. Brake-lever cut-off switches stop the motor immediately; if the motor keeps running after you stop pedalling for more than a second, check the brake sensor.
What is 'walk mode'?
Hold Down for 2 seconds; see the walk-assist guide.
