How to change the backlight brightness on the Rad Power Bikes LCD

Rad Power Bikes LCD display (RadRover, RadCity, RadRunner, RadWagon)

Brightness is the first item in the Settings menu, three levels. The backlight also drives the headlight indicator on some models.

Step by step

  1. Turn the display on, then press and hold the Up and Down arrows together for about 2 seconds to open the Settings menu.
  2. The screen shows 'bL' with 1, 2 or 3. Press Up or Down to choose (1 dim, 3 bright).
  3. Hold MODE for 2 seconds to save and exit.
  4. Newer Rad LCD (2022+): hold MODE > 'Brightness' > choose Auto or 1 to 5.
Tip: Level 3 costs almost nothing in range; the main battery powers the display.

Can't find it?

If the display is very dim even at bL3, the backlight is failing (common on 2018 units after rain ingress). Rad sells the display as a spare.

Frequently asked

Can I turn the backlight off?

No; bL1 is the minimum.

The display goes black in sunlight.

That is LCD polarisation with sunglasses, not a setting. Tilt the display.

Auto brightness does nothing.

Only the 2022+ display has a light sensor; older ones show three fixed levels.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
