How to change speed units on a Cowboy 3, 4, 4 ST or Cruiser
A Cowboy has no display; speed is shown in the app (and on a phone mounted on the handlebar). Units are a profile setting in the Cowboy app.
Step by step
- Open the Cowboy app and tap the profile icon (bottom right).
- Tap 'Settings' and then 'Units' (older versions: 'Measurement system').
- Choose 'Metric (km, km/h)' or 'Imperial (miles, mph)'.
- Go back to the ride screen; the speedometer and ride history now use the new unit.
- If you use Apple Health / Google Fit or Strava sync, the exported rides keep their own units.
Tip: Units are stored on your account, so they follow you to any phone you log in on.
Can't find it?
In app versions before 2022 the option was under Settings > 'Preferences'. If there is no option, update the app; the setting has existed since Cowboy 3.
Frequently asked
Does the assist cut-off change with the units?
No. EU bikes cut out at 25 km/h and US bikes at 20 mph regardless of which unit you display.
Can I show km on a US Cowboy?
Yes, units are only a display preference.
Why does my ride history show miles for old rides?
Old rides are converted on the fly; the app can show a mix for a moment after switching. Pull down to refresh.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
