How the lights work on a Cowboy 3, 4 and Cruiser

Cowboy 3 / 4 / Cruiser (Cowboy app)

Cowboy lights are integrated and switch on automatically when the bike is unlocked. On Cowboy 4 / Cruiser you can choose Auto or Always on in the app; there is no physical switch.

Step by step

  1. Open the Cowboy app and connect to the bike.
  2. Go to Settings > 'Bike' > 'Lights'.
  3. Choose 'Auto' (ambient light sensor) or 'Always on'. Some markets do not offer 'Off' for legal reasons.
  4. Lights switch off automatically when the bike locks or after a few minutes of standing still.
  5. Cowboy 3: lights are always on when unlocked; there is no setting.
Tip: If the front light is dead but the rear works, the cable inside the head tube has usually chafed; a Cowboy service point can replace it.

Can't find it?

No 'Lights' option means Cowboy 3 (no setting) or the app is not connected.

Frequently asked

Can I turn the lights off to save battery?

On Cowboy 4 in some regions, no; the setting is Auto or Always on. The lights use very little power.

The rear light flashes.

Two flashes means locked; continuous flashing means the alarm is triggered.

Do the lights work without the app?

Yes; once unlocked the bike handles them itself.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
