Cowboy assist cut-off and why it cannot be changed

Cowboy 3 / 4 / Cruiser (Cowboy app)

Cowboys sold in Europe cut out at 25 km/h, US bikes at 20 mph. The limit is set in firmware per market and there is no app setting.

Step by step

  1. Check your region: Settings > 'Bike' > 'About' shows the bike's region/market.
  2. Confirm on a ride: the app speedometer shows assist dropping off at 25 km/h (EU) or 20 mph (US).
  3. If an EU bike cuts out earlier (e.g. 20 km/h): check tyre size has not been changed (larger tyre = miscalculated speed) and update firmware.
  4. A market change (EU to US or vice versa) is only possible via Cowboy support and only with proof the bike is exported.
Tip: The Cowboy is a pedelec under EU law (250 W, 25 km/h). It has no throttle and no unlockable modes.

Can't find it?

There is no speed setting in the app, on any version. Third-party 'derestriction' kits for hub motors do not exist for Cowboy's proprietary system.

Frequently asked

Is derestricting a Cowboy legal?

No. In the EU it turns the bike into an unregistered moped: no insurance, fines, and Cowboy's warranty is void.

Why does my Cowboy assist to 27 km/h on the app?

GPS speed lag or tolerance; the motor controller uses wheel speed and cuts at 25 km/h.

Can I get the 20 mph US limit in Europe?

No; 20 mph is 32 km/h and above the EU limit.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
