Changing the speed unit on a Bafang 850C, 860C, 500C or 750C colour display

Bafang 850C / 860C / 500C / 750C colour displays

On the colour displays the unit is Display Setting → Unit and takes seconds. It changes speed, distance and temperature together.

Step by step

  1. Switch on, then press and hold + and − together (on a 860C with an M/i button: hold + and − as well, or press i twice on some firmware) for about 2 seconds until the Setting menu opens.
  2. Highlight Display Setting with + / − and press power to open it.
  3. Scroll to Unit and press power. The value flashes: Metric or Imperial.
  4. Press + or − to select Metric (km/h) or Imperial (mph), confirm with power.
  5. Scroll to Back, press power, then Exit.
  6. Check the riding screen: the small text next to the speed now says km/h or mph.
Tip: The 500C's tiny menu uses 'Km/Mile' instead of Unit, and on the 750C it is inside 'General'. Same setting, same behaviour.

Can't find it?

If you see 'Unit' but the value does not change, the display has a start-up password enabled and the menu is read-only until it is entered; see the password guide. On OEM firmware from some US brands the unit is fixed to mph.

Frequently asked

Does mph mode change the speed limit?

No, the limit is stored in km/h internally and shown converted. 25 km/h becomes 15.5 mph.

The distance history looks wrong after switching.

ODO is stored as a number; the display just relabels it. 1000 km will read 1000 mi for a second before the firmware recalculates on the next power cycle on some versions; it corrects itself.

Can I set km/h speed with miles distance?

No, Metric/Imperial applies to everything.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
