Start-up password and the 8018 service code on Bafang colour displays
Two things called password: a user start-up code (Display Setting → Password) and the service code 8018 that unlocks wheel size and speed limit on stock firmware.
Step by step
- Switch on, then press and hold + and − together (on a 860C with an M/i button: hold + and − as well, or press i twice on some firmware) for about 2 seconds until the Setting menu opens.
- Start-up code: Display Setting → Password → Enable. Enter four digits with + / −, power to confirm each. Repeat to confirm.
- Now every power-on asks for the code. Enter it the same way.
- Remove it: Display Setting → Password → Disable, then enter the current code.
- Service code: when Wheel Size or Speed Limit under Information asks for a password, enter 8018.
- The service code never persists; you type it each time.
Tip: These codes are published in the manufacturer manuals and on every dealer forum; they are not secrets, but the settings behind them can make the bike illegal or damage the drive, so change one thing at a time and note the old value. Forgotten start-up code: there is no reset on the handlebar; a dealer with BESST can clear it, or the display gets replaced.
Can't find it?
If 8018 is refused, the bike brand shipped custom firmware. Do not believe forum posts claiming 1919 or 0512 for Bafang colour displays; those belong to S866/KT-family displays and will do nothing here.
Frequently asked
Is 8018 the same on the 500C, 750C, 850C and 860C?
Yes, on stock Bafang firmware.
Second-hand display asks for a code I do not know?
Try 0000, 1234, 8018. Otherwise BESST or replacement; the display cannot be reset by removing power.
Does the password lock the bike?
It only blocks the motor. The bike still pedals.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
