How to set the number of assist levels on a Bafang 850C / 860C / 500C
Display Setting → Max PAS chooses 3, 5 or 9 levels. The controller still decides how much power each level gives.
Step by step
- Switch on, then press and hold + and − together (on a 860C with an M/i button: hold + and − as well, or press i twice on some firmware) for about 2 seconds until the Setting menu opens.
- Open Display Setting and scroll to Max PAS.
- Press power, choose 3, 5 or 9 with + / −, confirm.
- Back → Exit.
- On the riding screen press + until the level stops climbing: it should stop at the number you chose.
Tip: The 860C also has an 'Eco / Sport' style mode on some OEM firmware; that is a separate throttle-response map and does not change the level count.
Can't find it?
Missing Max PAS = OEM-locked. Some 750C firmware calls it 'PAS Level Mode'. If levels jump 1 → 3 → 5 with no 2 or 4, you are on 3-level mode with a 5-level icon set, which is a cosmetic quirk on early 850C firmware; set 5 and back to 3 to clear it.
Frequently asked
Which is best, 5 or 9?
5 for most riders: every level is a noticeable step. 9 suits riders who want a tiny step from 'just enough' to 'a bit more' on long flat rides.
Does level 3 of 3 equal level 9 of 9?
Yes, both are the controller's maximum.
Can I remove level 0?
No, 0 (no assist) is always there so you can pedal unassisted.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
