Adjusting day and night brightness on a Bafang 850C / 860C

Bafang 850C / 860C / 500C / 750C colour displays

The colour displays have a brightness setting in Display Setting and a separate dimmed level when the lights are on. Both are quick to change.

Step by step

  1. Switch on, then press and hold + and − together (on a 860C with an M/i button: hold + and − as well, or press i twice on some firmware) for about 2 seconds until the Setting menu opens.
  2. Open Display Setting → Brightness.
  3. Set 10 %–100 % (or 1–5) with + / −, confirm with power.
  4. On the 860C there is a second item, 'Night Brightness' or 'Light Mode Brightness'; set that for when the headlight is on.
  5. Back → Exit.
Tip: The 850C panel is bright but reflective; a matte screen protector helps more than the last 20 % of brightness. At 100 % on a hot day the display can hit 60 °C, which is normal.

Can't find it?

If the screen goes dim on its own, the ambient-light sensor (small hole above the screen) is deciding; cover it to test. Auto mode cannot be disabled on all OEM firmware.

Frequently asked

Does brightness use much battery?

About 1 W at maximum; negligible.

Screen flickers at low brightness?

PWM dimming at 10–20 % can flicker in cold weather; use 30 % or above.

Screen stays dark after power-on?

Give it 2 seconds; the 850C boots slowly. If it stays black with the backlight glowing, the ribbon cable inside is loose: warranty job.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
