Where the speed limit lives on a Bafang 850C / 860C / 500C and what you may legally set
Information → Speed Limit shows the assist cut-off. Aftermarket kits let you edit it (often to 40 km/h); OEM bikes lock it or hide it behind 8018.
Step by step
- Switch on, then press and hold + and − together (on a 860C with an M/i button: hold + and − as well, or press i twice on some firmware) for about 2 seconds until the Setting menu opens.
- Open Information → Speed Limit and press power.
- If the value flashes: set it with + / − in km/h (mph if Imperial). Confirm with power.
- If a password box appears: enter 8018. If it is refused, the item is locked by the bike maker.
- Back → Exit and test ride: assist must fade out within 1 km/h of the value.
- Set it back to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) before riding on the road in the EU/UK, 20 mph in the US for Class 1/2.
Can't find it?
The controller's own speed limit (set with the programming cable on BBS kits, BESST on M-series) always wins if it is lower. If the display says 40 and the bike stops at 25, the controller is limiting. If the display shows 25 and the bike goes faster, someone has fitted a 'tuning dongle' between speed sensor and controller; remove it before a roadside check.
Frequently asked
Legal in the Netherlands?
25 km/h assist cut-off. Above that it is a 'speed pedelec' needing a blue plate, insurance, helmet and it may not use most cycle paths.
What happens to the warranty?
Bafang and every OEM void the drive warranty if the logged speed limit was raised. The 860C logs the setting.
Can I set it lower, e.g. for a child?
Yes, down to about 12 km/h on most firmware.
