Enabling or disabling the throttle on an S866 / S830 / S861 and the legal position

S866 / S830 / S861 LCD (generic hub-motor e-bikes, Fiido, Engwe, Himiway etc.)

P10 chooses pedal-assist only (0), throttle only (1) or both (2). P09 sets whether the throttle works from standstill. These two make the bike EU-legal or not.

Step by step

  1. Switch the display on. Press and hold + and − (up and down) together for about 2–3 seconds. On most bikes a password screen appears: enter 1919 (set each digit with + / −, confirm with power). If 1919 is refused, try 0512, 0000 or 8018. The parameter list then opens at P01.
  2. Press power to P10. 0 = PAS only (throttle ignored: EU-legal), 1 = throttle only, 2 = both (default on US bikes).
  3. Press power to P09. 0 = zero start (throttle from standstill), 1 = non-zero start (throttle only once the wheel turns).
  4. Power (short press) moves to the next parameter; + / − change the value; hold + and − together to save and exit.
  5. Test the throttle carefully at level 1 with the rear wheel off the ground first.
Tip: Legal note: in the EU a throttle that drives the bike above 6 km/h without pedalling takes it out of the pedelec class (it needs L1e type approval, plates and insurance). In the UK a full-speed 'twist and go' is only legal on bikes that were type-approved as such; the 6 km/h walk-speed throttle is fine. In the USA a throttle up to 20 mph is legal on Class 2 e-bikes but not on Class 1 or 3, and many trails ban throttle bikes outright. Many bikes sold in the EU with an S866 come with P10 = 2 from the factory; that is on the importer, but the rider gets the fine.

Can't find it?

Throttle dead with P10 = 2: level 0 selected (P05 scheme with 0 level; throttle needs level ≥ 1 on most firmware), brake icon on, or throttle Hall failure (error 04 / E004). Throttle limited to 6 km/h: some EU firmware caps it that way in the controller; that is the legal walk-throttle and cannot be raised here.

Frequently asked

Legal EU setting?

P10 = 0, or a controller that caps the throttle at 6 km/h.

Throttle works but assist does not?

P10 = 1 selected. Set 2.

Can the throttle go faster than P08?

No, P08 caps both.

Manuals and video

These displays are sold unbranded by many factories, so there is no single official manual. Check the manual that came with your bike, or your bike brand's support page.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
