Speed limit on a KT LCD3 / LCD5 / LCD8 and what is legal
The very first General Settings item is the maximum assisted speed, 12–72 km/h on aftermarket firmware. It is the easiest limit to change on any e-bike, which is why the legal warning matters.
Step by step
- Switch the display on. Within a few seconds, press and hold ▲ and ▼ together for about 2 seconds: the General Settings screen appears with the maximum speed flashing.
- The max speed flashes. Press ▲ / ▼ to set it (in km/h, or mph if you chose MPH).
- Hold ▲ and ▼ for 2 seconds to save.
- Test ride: assist should fade out about 1 km/h above the value.
- Set 25 km/h (EU/UK) or 20 mph (US Class 1/2) before riding on public roads.
Can't find it?
Assist cuts at 25 whatever you set: the controller has its speed-limit wire connected (two white wires shorted together on KT controllers) or an OEM controller with a hard limit. Assist cuts far below the set value: wheel diameter or P2 wrong, so the controller thinks you are faster than you are.
Frequently asked
What does 72 km/h do?
Nothing on a 250 W hub; it just removes the cap. On a 1000 W+ kit it is a moped speed and illegal without registration.
Is there a separate throttle limit?
Only via C4 on some firmware (throttle capped at 6 km/h or at the max speed).
Does the limit apply in walk mode?
No, walk is fixed at 6 km/h.
Manuals and video
These displays are sold unbranded by many factories, so there is no single official manual. Check the manual that came with your bike, or your bike brand's support page.
