Speed limit on a Tongsheng TSDZ2 VLCD5, VLCD6 or XH18 and the law

Tongsheng TSDZ2 VLCD5 / VLCD6 / XH18

Stock TSDZ2 displays have a speed limit item in the settings list on aftermarket kits (often 25 default, up to 45 selectable). OEM bikes lock it at 25 and hide the item.

Step by step

  1. VLCD5 (4 buttons): switch on, then press and hold the i (mode) button for about 3 seconds until the settings list appears. VLCD6 and XH18 (3 buttons): hold + and − together for 2–3 seconds. Menu layout differs by firmware, so navigate by the item names below.
  2. Step to the speed limit item (a number with a speed icon or 'SPD LIM').
  3. If it flashes, set it with + / −.
  4. i (or power) moves to the next item; + / − change the value; hold i (VLCD5) or + and − (VLCD6/XH18) to save and leave.
  5. Test on private ground; the TSDZ2 fades assist out over the last 2 km/h before the limit.
  6. Set 25 km/h (EU/UK) or 32 km/h / 20 mph (US Class 1) for road use.
Tip: Legal assist cut-off on public roads: EU and UK 25 km/h (15.5 mph) with a 250 W nominal motor; USA 20 mph for Class 1 and 2, 28 mph pedal-assist only for Class 3 (state rules vary). Raising the limit above that turns the bike into an unregistered moped: no insurance cover in a crash, police can confiscate it, and the motor warranty is void. Keep the higher setting for private land only.

Can't find it?

Item missing: OEM-locked firmware; the only way to change it is a firmware flash (ST-Link on the controller), which is dealer or enthusiast work and voids the warranty. Item present but assist cuts at 25 anyway: the display value is ignored by an OEM controller.

Frequently asked

What is the maximum?

Usually 45 km/h on aftermarket VLCD5 firmware; the 36 V TSDZ2 runs out of motor around 35 anyway.

Legal in Germany?

25 km/h. Above that the bike is a 'Kleinkraftrad' without insurance.

Does OSF allow more?

Yes, and it is the rider's responsibility; OSF also offers a street mode that locks 25.

Manuals and video

These displays are sold unbranded by many factories, so there is no single official manual. Check the manual that came with your bike, or your bike brand's support page.
