Assist levels (ECO / TOUR / SPEED / TURBO) on a Tongsheng TSDZ2 VLCD5, VLCD6 or XH18

Tongsheng TSDZ2 VLCD5 / VLCD6 / XH18

The stock TSDZ2 firmware has four assist levels plus off; the VLCD5 shows them as ECO, TOUR, SPEED and TURBO, the VLCD6 and XH18 as 1–4. The number of levels is not adjustable on stock firmware.

Step by step

  1. Switch on. Press + to raise the level, − to lower it; 0 is no assist.
  2. VLCD5: the level names ECO / TOUR / SPEED / TURBO light up; 1 = ECO (about 30 % torque multiplication), 4 = TURBO (about 300 %).
  3. The TSDZ2 is a torque-sensing motor: assist is proportional to how hard you pedal, so level 1 with hard pedalling gives more than level 4 with soft pedalling.
  4. To change the number of levels or the per-level factors, the open-source firmware (OSF) with an 860C, SW102 or VLCD5/6 OSF variant is needed; the stock menu has no item for it.
  5. If the display starts in a different level each time, that is the firmware remembering the last one; not a fault.
Tip: Riders who find TURBO too abrupt usually have the torque sensor calibration off: lift the bike and check the display shows 0 W with no foot on the pedal; if it shows power at rest, the sensor is pre-loaded (crank arm too tight or a bent axle).

Can't find it?

Only 3 levels shown: the OEM firmware with 3 levels (some Dutch and German brands). Levels show but no assist: the torque sensor or its cable; error 08 or a flashing crank icon points there.

Frequently asked

Can I get 9 levels?

Only with the open-source firmware; stock is 4.

Level 1 already too strong?

On stock firmware no; use OSF or pedal softer. Check the torque sensor for pre-load first.

Does the level affect the throttle?

The stock throttle (if fitted) gives full power regardless of level.

Manuals and video

These displays are sold unbranded by many factories, so there is no single official manual. Check the manual that came with your bike, or your bike brand's support page.
