Shimano STEPS error E035: Abnormal bicycle settings detected
The drive unit has detected an irregularity in the bicycle's stored configuration parameters, not a hardware fault on its own. As a result the system disables pedal assist and walk assist so the bike behaves like a regular, heavy bicycle until the settings are rewritten. Power still switches on and the display lights up, but no motor support is delivered.

| Typical cost | Dealer diagnostic and E-TUBE PROJECT configuration rewrites typically run EUR 40-90, rising to EUR 120-200 if firmware on multiple modules has to be reflashed or a part is found faulty. |
Likely causes
- Configuration corrupted after a firmware update or battery disconnect
- E-TUBE PROJECT profile wiped, partially loaded, or written with wrong parameters
- Component swap (display, battery, drive unit) without re-pairing through E-TUBE PROJECT
- Mixed firmware versions between drive unit, battery and display after an incomplete update
- Previous fault code not cleared from the unit's memory before returning to service
- Non-genuine accessory altered a parameter the controller relies on
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E035
- Switch the system off, remove the battery, wait 60 seconds, refit and switch on to confirm the code returns.
- Charge the battery above 50 percent; a low cell can block a configuration write.
- Connect the bike to a PC or smartphone running E-TUBE PROJECT and run a fresh customisation / settings write.
- Use E-TUBE PROJECT to update firmware on drive unit, battery and display so all modules share the same profile.
- Recheck the wheel circumference, assist profile and torque limit values, then write them again.
- If E035 persists after a clean write, the unit must be inspected and the configuration rewritten by an authorised Shimano dealer with E-TUBE PROJECT Professional.
- Take the bike to a Shimano service point for diagnosis and parameter rewrite on the bench.
Warranty: A genuine configuration fault caused by a component or software defect inside the two-year warranty window is normally covered; crash damage, water ingress and user-modified settings are not.

Frequently asked
Can I reset Shimano error E035 myself?
A power cycle will clear the display temporarily, but the code usually returns on the next start because the stored settings are still wrong. A proper reset means rewriting the configuration through E-TUBE PROJECT, which a dealer should carry out.
Is it safe to keep riding with E035?
The motor assistance is cut, so the bike is heavy and awkward to pedal, especially on hills. There is no immediate danger, but riding without working assist is not recommended and the fault should be cleared before normal use.
How much will it cost and is it under warranty?
A configuration rewrite at a dealer is usually EUR 40-90. If the fault traces back to a genuine Shimano component failure within the warranty period, the repair is covered; settings damaged by a crash, water or unauthorised modification are billed to the owner.
