Shimano STEPS error E011: Shimano Steps general system error

Shimano STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP801)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The STEPS controller has flagged a system error it cannot classify more precisely, so the drive unit cuts motor support until the code clears. The bike rolls and pedals like a normal unpowered bicycle, but walk assist and any automatic shifting behaviour are lost. The display keeps showing E011 and the buttons may feel unresponsive until a restart is attempted.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E011

  1. Switch the system off using the power button on the display.
  2. Press and hold the battery power button until every LED goes dark, then switch the battery back on.
  3. Power the display on again and ride a short distance to see whether E011 clears on its own.
  4. Pull the battery out and inspect the cradle and the down tube pins for dirt, moisture or bent contacts; clean and dry if needed.
  5. Unplug and reseat the display cable at the handlebar and at the drive unit junction block.
  6. Update or reflash the drive unit firmware through an authorised dealer if the code returns.
  7. Book the bike in with the place of purchase for a full Shimano diagnostic read if the error is still present after step 6.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is needed once a clean power cycle and reseated connectors do not clear the code, because the drive unit, harness or firmware must be checked with Shimano diagnostic software.
Warranty: A genuine STEPS component fault inside the two-year warranty window is normally repaired or replaced at no cost, while water ingress, crash damage and worn connectors are usually excluded.
Typical cost: Diagnostic and firmware work typically runs 40 to 90 EUR, a drive unit replacement inside warranty adds only labour of about 80 to 180 EUR for the owner, and a full harness repair out of warranty can reach 200 to 350 EUR.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset Shimano error E011?

Yes, switch the system off, hold the battery power button until the LEDs go dark, then switch the battery and the display back on. If E011 returns the controller has logged a real fault and a dealer needs to read it with Shimano diagnostics.

Is it safe to keep riding with E011?

No, motor support is cut and the controller is fighting an internal fault that could return at any moment. Ride only as far as you need to reach a safe place to stop, then carry out the reset procedure.

Will Shimano cover E011 under warranty?

A genuine drive unit or controller fault inside the two-year warranty is normally repaired or replaced at no cost for the part. Labour, water damage, crash damage and connector wear are usually charged to the owner.
