Update firmware on a Yamaha PW e-bike (Display A, C, X, Interface X)
Yamaha firmware has always been dealer territory: the diagnostic tool connects to the drive unit by cable. Only the Display X / Interface X generation can receive some updates over the Yamaha app.
Step by step
- Check the generation: Display A / C bikes are dealer-only. Book a Yamaha or bike-brand dealer; the update takes about 30 minutes.
- Display X / Interface X: connect the Yamaha e-bike app, open settings > software update. If an update is listed, keep the phone close and the battery above 50 %.
- After any update, re-check units, clock and assist mode availability (AUTOMATIC may appear or disappear).
- If the app lists no update but you have a known issue, the dealer tool may still have a newer version.
Tip: Ask the dealer for the firmware version before and after; some brand-specific builds lag behind Yamaha's own.
Can't find it?
Update fails in the app: retry with another phone, then dealer. A bike that will not switch on after a failed update needs dealer recovery.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
