Change and customise assist modes on a Yamaha PW e-bike (Display A, C, X, Interface X)

Yamaha PW displays (Display A, Display C, Interface X, Display X)

Yamaha modes are ECO+, ECO, STD, HIGH (and EXPW/EXTRA POWER on PW-X models), plus AUTOMATIC on newer units. On Display A and C the modes are fixed. Only the Display X / Interface X generation with the Yamaha app lets you adjust assist strength per mode.

Step by step

  1. Ride screen: press the assist switch up/down to step through ECO+ / ECO / STD / HIGH (/ EXPW). The display shows the mode name.
  2. AUTOMATIC (PW-X3, PW-S2, PW-ST 2021+): step past HIGH or select via the switch; the drive unit picks the level from your effort.
  3. Display X / Interface X only: open the Yamaha e-bike app, connect, and open assist settings. Set assist strength per mode within the allowed range and save.
  4. Display A / C: no customisation possible; the bike brand's dealer tool sets the assist map.
Tip: If a second-hand Yamaha feels weak in every mode, the previous owner did not detune it (they can't); check the battery health and the torque sensor error log at a dealer.

Can't find it?

No AUTOMATIC mode although the motor is a PW-X3: the brand disabled it. Firmware from the dealer can enable it on some models.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
