Update firmware on a Shimano STEPS system with an EW-EN100 junction
The EW-EN100 was one of the first STEPS units that could be updated from the phone. E-TUBE Project handles the junction, drive unit and battery over Bluetooth.
Step by step
- Charge to at least 50 %. Connect E-TUBE Project.
- Open [Firmware update]; the app lists units with newer firmware.
- Update the EW-EN100 first if listed, then the drive unit and battery. Keep the phone within a metre.
- Switch the bike off and on after the last update and re-check assist settings.
- Units marked 'dealer only' need the wired SM-PCE02 update at a shop.
Tip: Update the junction first: a newer junction firmware often fixes Bluetooth dropouts that would otherwise break the drive-unit update.
Can't find it?
Update fails at the same point: disable battery saver for the app, keep the screen on, and try another phone. Wired dealer update is the fallback.
Frequently asked

5-15 minutes over Bluetooth.
The LED is flashing red after an update.
Check E-TUBE Project for the error code; E051 (version mismatch) is cleared by updating the remaining units.
Do updates change the speed limit?
No.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
