Dapu error 21: Motor Drawing Too Much Current
The controller has measured motor current above its normal operating limit. To protect the controller, motor and cabling, the system shuts motor assist down as soon as the threshold is crossed. The display will show zero assist, the throttle becomes inactive and walk assist will not engage until the fault is cleared.

| Typical cost | Budget roughly €40–€90 for a replacement motor cable, €180–€320 for a controller, €350–€600 for a motor, plus around €60–€120 dealer labour for fitting and diagnostics. |
Likely causes
- Loose or corroded motor cable connector at the controller or motor end
- Chafed or pinched motor cable with damaged insulation causing a partial short
- Water ingress in the motor cable junction or controller phase connector
- Failing motor windings drawing excessive current under load
- Faulty Hall sensor sending erratic position signals to the controller
- Internal failure of the controller current-sensing circuit
How to fix Dapu error 21
- Switch off the system and remove the battery before any inspection.
- Unplug the motor cable at both the controller and the motor and check for bent pins, green corrosion or moisture; clean and reseat firmly.
- Run a visual check along the full length of the motor cable for chafing, pinch marks or melted sections, especially near the swingarm, dropouts and rack mounts.
- Inspect the controller housing for water staining and confirm the phase connector is dry and fully clicked in.
- Refit the battery, power the system on and test under no load. If error 21 returns immediately, swap the motor cable next.
- If a new motor cable does not clear the fault, the controller or the motor itself must be replaced — hand the bike to an authorised Dapu dealer at this point.
Warranty: A genuine controller or motor failure inside the two-year warranty period is normally covered, but water ingress, crash damage and motor cables damaged by external wear are usually treated as consumables and excluded.

Frequently asked
Can I reset dapu error 21?
There is no reset button that clears this code. It reappears the moment the system is powered up if the overcurrent condition is still present, so the underlying electrical fault has to be repaired first.
Is it safe to keep riding with error 21?
No. The controller cuts motor assist on purpose because the current draw is outside limits; continuing to ride risks overheating the wiring loom and damaging the controller or motor further.
Will warranty cover the cost of fixing error 21?
If a controller or motor fails inside the warranty period with no sign of water damage, impact or modified wiring, the faulty part is usually replaced free of charge, though motor cable and labour are commonly charged.
