Dapu error 09: Battery voltage above operating range
The controller has measured battery voltage higher than the parameters it is programmed to accept. To protect the motor, controller and display, the drive system shuts motor assist down. The display will show zero speed, throttle response is removed and walk assist is disabled until the fault clears.
| Drive system | Dapu controller (used by Pedego, Batavus, Koga and other European brands) |
| Severity | Dealer needed |
| Keep riding? | Do not keep riding |
| Typical cost | Expect €30 to €60 for dealer diagnostics, €150 to €400 for a replacement Dapu controller and €300 to €800 for a correctly rated replacement battery pack, depending on capacity and brand fitment. |
Likely causes
- Battery fitted is a higher voltage than the system rating (for example a 52 V pack on a 48 V system).
- Battery management board has failed and is reporting an inflated pack voltage to the controller.
- Charger is overcharging the pack and the BMS has not cut the charge current in time.
- Damaged or pinched cable from throttle, pedal assist sensor or motor introducing a 5 V short to the sense line.
- Corroded or wet connector at the controller disturbing the voltage reference.
- Controller voltage sensing circuit itself is faulty.
- Battery was replaced recently with a pack of the wrong nominal voltage.
How to fix Dapu error 09
- 1. Stop riding, switch the system off and remove the key or display if removable.
- 2. Read the voltage label on the battery and compare it to the voltage printed on the controller or listed in the bike manual.
- 3. If the battery is the wrong voltage, fit a battery of the correct rating and clear the error by powering the bike off and on.
- 4. If the battery is correct, try the bike with a known-good battery of the same rated voltage.
- 5. If the error returns with a correct battery, switch off and unplug the throttle connector, then power the bike on and check whether the error clears.
- 6. Repeat the test with the pedal assist sensor disconnected, then again with the motor phase or hall connector unplugged, to isolate a 5 V short.
- 7. If the error persists after these isolation steps, take the bike to an authorised dealer for controller diagnostics and repair.
Warranty: A genuine component fault on the controller, BMS or battery inside the typical two year warranty period is normally covered, while water ingress, crash damage, modification or fitting the wrong battery is treated as owner fault and excluded.
Typical cost: Expect €30 to €60 for dealer diagnostics, €150 to €400 for a replacement Dapu controller and €300 to €800 for a correctly rated replacement battery pack, depending on capacity and brand fitment.
Frequently asked
Can I reset dapu error 09?
No. Power cycling the display will not clear this code because the controller is detecting a real overvoltage condition. The underlying cause, whether a wrong battery, a charging fault or a 5 V short, must be fixed before the code will go away.
Is it safe to keep riding with dapu 09?
No. Motor assist is shut down and continuing to ride under power can push voltage into the controller and damage power stage components. Ride only on your own leg power to the nearest safe place and stop using electric assistance until the fault is resolved.
Will the repair be covered under warranty and what will it cost?
If the cause is a genuine controller or BMS fault within the two year warranty window the manufacturer covers parts and labour at no charge. Out of warranty the most likely costs are €150 to €400 for a controller swap or €300 to €800 for a new battery if the pack itself is overvolting.
