Dapu error 26: Hall sensor signal fault in the motor

Dapu controller (used by Pedego, Batavus, Koga and other European brands)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The controller has stopped trusting the position feedback coming from the hall sensors inside the hub motor. Those sensors tell the controller where the rotor is so it can switch the phases in the right order; when the signal is missing or garbage the controller cuts motor output to protect itself. On the bike this shows up as no pedal assist, no throttle response, no walk assist and a speed reading that sits at zero or jumps randomly. The display stays powered but the bike will only roll under your own leg power.

Likely causes

How to fix Dapu error 26

  1. Switch the system off and remove the battery before touching any connector.
  2. Locate the motor cable connectors, usually one near the controller under the down tube cover and one at the axle, and inspect both for bent pins, green corrosion or moisture.
  3. Unplug both ends, dry and clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner if needed, then push them back in until they click.
  4. Trace the cable along its full run looking for cuts, pinch points or melted sections, especially where it flexes near the dropouts.
  5. Fit a new motor cable if the wiring itself is damaged.
  6. Swap in a known-good controller if the error returns after the cable has been confirmed good; this needs the battery in for a test.
  7. Hand the bike to a dealer for a motor swap or internal diagnosis once the cable and controller have been ruled out.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is required once the motor cable and controller have been eliminated, because opening or replacing the hub motor needs a workstand, the correct tools and a post-repair diagnostic ride.
Warranty: A genuine motor, controller or wiring failure inside the manufacturer's two-year warranty is normally covered, while water ingress, impact damage, aftermarket tampering and worn connectors are treated as owner fault and excluded.
Typical cost: A replacement motor cable runs €20-60 fitted, a new controller €80-180, and a complete hub motor swap €250-450 plus around €80-150 labour, depending on brand and motor type.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset dapu error 26?

No reset clears a hall sensor fault on this system. Powering the bike off and back on, or unplugging the battery for a few minutes, will only make the display light up again with the same code. The fault has to be fixed at its source before the controller will drive the motor.

Is it safe to keep riding with this code?

No. With the assist cut off the bike behaves like a heavy unpowered bicycle, which is awkward on hills and unsafe in traffic where you expected motor support. The controller has disabled the motor for a reason and riding on until it clears risks further damage to the cable or controller.

Will it be covered under warranty and what will it cost?

If the bike is less than two years old and there is no sign of water damage, crash damage or DIY wiring work, the faulty part is usually replaced at no charge. Outside warranty or with obvious water or impact damage, expect €20-60 for a cable, €80-180 for a controller or €250-450 plus labour for a new motor.
