VanMoof error 23: No connection to the Bluetooth chip
The main board cannot reach the BLE (Bluetooth) chip in the cartridge. The app will not connect, unlocking with the phone fails, and on some firmware versions the bike refuses to arm or disarm properly. The motor may still work if the bike is already unlocked.
Likely causes
- BLE module crashed after a failed firmware update
- Water damage inside the cartridge
- Cracked solder joint on the BLE chip from vibration
- Cartridge connector partly unseated (see error 17)
- Main board fault in the cartridge
How to fix VanMoof error 23
- Hard reset: hold the power button 10 to 15 seconds, wait a minute, power on and try the app again
- On the phone: toggle Bluetooth off and on, force-close the VanMoof app and reconnect
- Use the backup unlock code (the physical button sequence you set in the app) if the bike is locked
- Leave the bike indoors overnight if there is any chance of moisture in the top tube
- If the app still cannot see the bike, an independent VanMoof-capable shop can test or replace the cartridge; some shops repair the board
Warranty: Warranty from the original VanMoof B.V. died with the 2023 bankruptcy; the relaunched VanMoof (LAVOIE/McLaren Applied) only covers bikes sold by them after the relaunch, so most S3/X3 owners pay for repairs.
Typical cost: Cartridge board repair is roughly EUR 100-250 where a shop offers it; a replacement cartridge EUR 300-500 depending on availability.
Frequently asked
My VanMoof is locked and shows error 23, what now?
Use the backup code with the physical buttons. If you never set one, a VanMoof-capable shop can help, but it takes longer, so set a backup code as soon as the bike works again.
Can I ride with error 23?
If the bike is already unlocked, usually yes. The motor does not depend on Bluetooth. Just do not lock it until it is fixed.
Is error 23 related to the VanMoof servers?
No. This is a hardware link inside the bike. Server outages cause app login problems, not this code.
