How to check or change the assist speed limit (region setting) on a VanMoof

VanMoof S3 / X3 / S5 / A5 (VanMoof app + matrix display)

VanMoof bikes are limited to 25 km/h in the EU and 32 km/h (20 mph) in the US, controlled by the 'Region' (country) setting in the app. What you can change depends on the app version and where the bike was sold.

Step by step

  1. Open the VanMoof app, connect to the bike, and open Settings (gear icon).
  2. Under 'Bike settings' look for 'Region' or 'Country'. It shows 'EU' (25 km/h) or 'US' (32 km/h).
  3. If the option is selectable, tap it, choose the region, and confirm the legal notice.
  4. Keep the phone next to the bike for about 30 seconds; the change is written to the motor controller.
  5. Test-ride: the motor should cut out at the new limit. If it still cuts at the old one, lock/unlock and try again.
  6. If the option is greyed out or missing, it is locked to the country of sale and only VanMoof or a service partner can change it.
Tip: On many S3/X3 builds VanMoof let owners switch region freely; on the S5/A5 and on newer app versions it is locked. Do not expect the switch to be available on every bike.

Can't find it?

Look under Settings > 'Bike' > 'Speed limit' (older S3/X3 app) or Settings > 'Legal' > 'Region'. If there is nothing, VanMoof has locked it for your bike. Third-party apps (Bikey) can read the current region but VanMoof has asked them not to unlock speed changes.

Frequently asked

Is it legal to set US mode in Europe?

No. In the EU a pedelec must cut out at 25 km/h and have max 250 W continuous. A 32 km/h VanMoof on public roads is an unregistered moped: no insurance cover, fines, and possible confiscation. In the UK the limit is 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

Why does my S3 cut out at 25 km/h even in the US?

The region got reset to EU, usually after a firmware update or a motor swap. Set it back in the app; if it will not stick, contact VanMoof support with your frame number.

Can I go above 32 km/h?

Not via the app. Some hardware hacks exist, but they void any remaining warranty and make the bike illegal in every market VanMoof sold in.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
