How to control the lights on a VanMoof S3, X3, S5 or A5

VanMoof S3 / X3 / S5 / A5 (VanMoof app + matrix display)

The lights are integrated and powered by the main battery. You choose Auto (light sensor), Always on, or Off in the app; there is no physical light switch.

Step by step

  1. Open the VanMoof app and connect to the bike.
  2. Tap the light icon on the bike screen (S3/X3) or open Settings > 'Lights' (S5/A5).
  3. Choose 'Auto' (sensor in the top tube decides), 'On' (always when unlocked) or 'Off'.
  4. The change applies immediately; the front matrix light and rear LEDs react within a second.
  5. Left in 'Auto', lights come on in tunnels and at dusk and switch off after the bike locks.
  6. S3/X3 only: Settings > 'Lights' > 'Daytime running lights' keeps the front light dim during the day.
Tip: Lights always switch off when the bike is locked and the battery is below 5%, whatever the setting. If they stay off while riding, check the battery first.

Can't find it?

On older S3/X3 apps the light setting is under Settings > 'Bike' > 'Lights'. If the icon is greyed out, the app is not connected to the bike.

Frequently asked

Can I turn the lights off completely to save battery?

Yes with 'Off', but the gain is minimal (a few percent per hour). In many countries lights are mandatory after dark.

The rear light blinks constantly.

Blinking rear light on the S3/X3 means the bike is in Theft defence or the alarm is armed and triggered. Unlock via the app and it stops.

The front light is on but very dim.

Daytime running light mode or a battery under 10%. Switch to 'On' and charge.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
