How to change the assist (power) level and use the Boost button on a VanMoof
VanMoof uses power levels 0 to 4 set from the app (S3/X3) or the handlebar button (S5/A5), plus a Boost button on the right grip for a short burst of full power.
Step by step
- S3/X3: open the app, connect, and tap the power-level icon (lightning bolt) on the bike screen. Choose 0 (off) to 4 (max). The matrix display briefly shows the level.
- S5/A5: press the right-hand handlebar button to cycle 0 to 4; the Halo Ring shows the level as segments.
- Boost: press and hold the Boost button (right side of the handlebar) while pedalling. Power goes to maximum until you let go or reach the speed limit.
- In the app under Settings > 'Ride' you can set the 'Default power level' the bike starts in.
- For hills, the S3/X3 gearbox also matters: Settings > 'Gear' > choose automatic shifting points (Eco / Normal / Sport). The S5/A5 has no gearbox setting.
- Level 4 roughly halves range compared to level 2; battery percentage in the app updates a few seconds after each change.
Can't find it?
On the S3/X3 the level is on the main bike screen, not in Settings. If you only see a battery percentage, the app is not connected to the bike.
Frequently asked
Can I change the power level while riding?
S5/A5: yes, with the handlebar button. S3/X3: only via the phone, so set it before you set off or mount the phone.
Level 4 feels the same as level 2.
Check the gear setting; in 'Eco' shifting the gearbox stays in a low ratio and the motor cannot deliver more. Also check the region: in EU mode the motor tapers from 20 km/h upwards regardless of level.
Does Boost work in level 0?
No. Level 0 disables the motor entirely, including Boost.
