How to change speed units (km/h / mph) on a VanMoof S3, X3, S5 or A5
The matrix display and the app show speed in whatever unit is set in the VanMoof app. It takes four taps and the bike picks it up over Bluetooth within a few seconds.
Step by step
- Open the VanMoof app with the bike unlocked and within Bluetooth range (the bike icon top-left should show 'Connected').
- Tap your bike, then the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right corner.
- Scroll to 'Bike settings' (S3/X3) or 'Ride settings' (S5/A5) and tap 'Units'.
- Choose 'Kilometres (km/h)' or 'Miles (mph)'.
- Wait until the spinner disappears; the matrix display (S3/X3) or Halo Ring speed readout (S5/A5) now uses the new unit.
- If the display still shows the old unit, lock and unlock the bike once so the setting is written to the bike.
Can't find it?
On older app versions the option is under Settings > 'Preferences' > 'Distance units' and applies to the whole app, not per bike. If the app is not connected to the bike (grey bike icon), the setting saves in the cloud and is pushed the next time the bike connects.
Frequently asked
Does changing to mph raise the speed limit?
No. Units only change the readout. The 25 km/h (EU) or 32 km/h (US) cut-off is set by the region setting.
Why does the app show km/h but the display shows mph?
The bike has not received the new setting. Move the phone next to the top tube, lock and unlock once, and check again. A firmware update can also reset it.
Can I change units without the app?
No. The S3/X3/S5/A5 have no menu on the bike itself; every setting goes through the app or, for offline use, a third-party app such as Bikey.
