Shimano STEPS reset: from the power button to E-TUBE Project
STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP8, EP801) has an unusually good user-level reset path: E-TUBE Project on a phone or PC can restore settings and read the error log without a dealer. It still cannot clear a genuine fault, and some errors (E010, E020, E043) are drive unit or battery hardware.
What you need
- Battery above 20%
- E-TUBE Project app (phone, via the bike's Bluetooth on EW-EN100, SC-E7000/E8000, SC-EM800 etc.) or E-TUBE Project for PC with the SM-PCE02 interface
- Assist and shift settings written down
Step by step
Press the power button on the battery (E6100/E8000 frame batteries) or on the display/junction. Wait 5 seconds. Switch on WITHOUT any weight on the pedals: STEPS calibrates the torque sensor at start-up and a foot on the pedal produces W013.
If OK: W013 or a momentary E-code gone and no repeat: it was the start-up calibration or a transient.
If not: Same code returns: continue with a battery-out power cycle.
Switch off, remove the battery (key, then slide). Wait 30 seconds. Refit until it locks, switch on with no load on the pedals.
If OK: Boots clean.
If not: Persistent E010 (system error), E020 (communication), E043 (firmware mismatch) or E014 (speed sensor): active fault; read the code and go to the STEPS error page. Skip to the E-TUBE steps for a log read.
Hold the display's menu/assist buttons to open the settings (on SC-E6100/E7000: hold the two assist buttons; on SC-E8000 via the switch). Items: clock, units, language, backlight, beep, 'Trip reset'. There is no factory reset in the display menu; deeper resets are done in E-TUBE.
If OK: Language, units, clock corrected; trip reset.
If not: Display blank or unresponsive: check the EW-SD50 / SD300 wire into the display and the junction. The display itself has nothing else to reset.
Open E-TUBE Project, connect via Bluetooth (turn the bike on, enable Bluetooth on the display or EW-EN100) or via SM-PCE02. Select the bike › Settings › 'Restore to default' (or per unit: drive unit, display, Di2 derailleur). Confirm. Reconnect and re-check assist and shift settings.
If OK: Assist characteristics, display settings and Di2 settings are stock again. Odd assist behaviour caused by tuning is gone.
If not: Behaviour unchanged: it was not a setting. Move to the error log.
In E-TUBE Project (app or PC) select 'Error log' / 'Maintenance'. It lists stored codes with a count and the last occurrence. Note the code and count. The customer version shows the log; clearing it is available in the dealer / professional version only.
If OK: You now know whether the error is a one-off (count 1) or chronic (count 20). A one-off after a wet ride can be watched.
If not: High count on E010/E020/E043: a chronic connection or firmware problem. Dealer for cable check, connector cleaning and a matched firmware update on all units.
In E-TUBE Ride: Settings › Bike › forget/unregister. On the phone: Bluetooth › forget the bike. Restart the phone. On the bike enable Bluetooth in the display menu (Bluetooth LE 'on') and pair again from E-TUBE Ride. The passkey is 000000 by default unless it was changed in E-TUBE Project.
If OK: App connected again. E-TUBE Ride problems never indicate a bike fault.
If not: Passkey unknown on a second-hand bike: connect with E-TUBE Project instead, which can set a new passkey, or ask a dealer.
In E-TUBE Project check 'Update' for every unit. Update all with the battery above 50% and the phone charged. A mismatched firmware between drive unit and display (E043) is fixed only by updating both to matching versions.
If OK: All units on the same firmware; E043 gone.
If not: Update fails repeatedly or a unit is not recognised: bad wire, bad junction (EW-JC130) or a dead unit. Dealer.
The dealer's E-TUBE Project (professional) can clear the error log, run the drive unit self-test, read the battery's cycle count and health, and pair a replacement drive unit or battery to the bike.
If OK: Log cleared after a repair. Ask for the battery health figure while they are in there.
If not: Self-test shows a drive unit or battery fault: no reset will help. Warranty or replacement.
What you now know for sure
- Start-up calibration (W013): Weight on the pedal when switching on. → Switch off, on again with feet off. Nothing broken.
- Transient: One-off code, count 1 in the error log, not back. → Watch it. Keep connectors dry.
- Settings: Cured by E-TUBE 'Restore to default'. → Re-enter your preferred assist and shift values.
- Firmware / communication: E020, E043 or repeated E010 in the log. → Match firmware on all units in E-TUBE; if it fails, dealer for wiring and junction.
- Hardware: Fault survives everything, or the dealer self-test fails. → Dealer, warranty. Do not try to reset it away.

Frequently asked
Can I clear the Shimano STEPS error log myself?
You can read it in the customer version of E-TUBE Project; clearing it is a dealer / professional function. A cleared log does not fix an active fault anyway: it reappears on the next ride.
Does E-TUBE 'Restore to default' erase the odometer?
No. Total distance is stored in the drive unit. It resets assist, display and Di2 settings only.
Why does my STEPS bike show W013 every morning?
You are switching it on with a foot on a pedal, or the crank/chainring is loaded by a bike stand. Switch on with the pedals completely free. If W013 shows with nothing touching the pedals, the torque sensor in the drive unit is drifting: dealer.
