Which Bosch eBike system is fitted to my bike?

Which motor do I have?Bosch eBike

This flow identifies whether your Bosch eBike runs the older Classic/system 2 generation or the newer smart system. It matters because the two generations use different error code formats, different apps, and different spare parts. Picking the wrong system will send you to the wrong fault list and the wrong replacement components.

Warning: Do not guess the system from the bicycle brand or a forum post; a Trek, Cube or Riese & Müller can ship with either system depending on year and spec, and the wrong pick gives you the wrong code list.

Step by step

1. Check whether the Bosch app on your phone is eBike Connect or eBike Flow
Open the app, look at its home screen name and icon
If OK: App is eBike Flow → smart system confirmed, go to verdicts
If not: App is eBike Connect or no app installed → continue to next step
2. Read the name printed on the display or control unit
Power on the bike, photograph the display, look for Intuvia, Purion, Kiox, Nyon, LED Remote, Kiox 300/500, Purion 200/400 or Intuvia 100/200
If OK: Display name matches the smart system list → smart system confirmed
If not: Display name matches the system 2 list, or no separate display is fitted → continue
3. Look for a System Controller integrated in the top tube
Inspect the top tube with a torch; a flush small panel with five LEDs and a power button indicates System Controller
If OK: System Controller present → smart system, no separate display expected
If not: No System Controller, handlebar unit only → continue
4. Read the label on the battery and compare to the lists
Remove the battery or photograph it through the frame opening; read PowerPack, PowerTube, CompactTube or PowerMore and the capacity number
If OK: PowerPack 300/400/500 or PowerTube 400/500/625 → system 2; PowerTube 625/750/800/600/540/720/360, CompactTube 400 or PowerMore 250 → smart system
If not: Label worn or missing → continue
5. Trigger or read a current fault code on the display or in the app
Turn the system on, do not ride, and read the code shown; if the app is paired, open Diagnostics in eBike Flow
If OK: Three-digit code on the display → system 2; hex code like 0x503001 in Flow → smart system
If not: No fault present and no display → take the bike to a dealer for a DiagnosticTool read

Frequently asked

Can I tell which Bosch system I have from the bicycle brand alone?

No. The same brand can ship system 2 on one model year and the smart system on the next. Always confirm by display, app or battery label.

Nothing is printed on the motor case and the display is dead, what now?

Take the bike to a Bosch certified dealer with the frame number and proof of purchase; the dealer DiagnosticTool will read the system and any stored faults directly.

Does the model year alone decide the system?

No. The smart system launched in 2021 and system 2 stayed in production alongside it, so a 2022 or later bike can still run system 2. Use display, app and battery label, not just the year.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
