Brose error 73: Pedal force sensor connection lost
The motor controller has lost its signal from the pedal force sensor (the torque sensor built into the bottom bracket area), so it no longer knows how hard you are pushing the pedals. As a safety response the drive shuts motor assist off completely, the speed reading drops to zero, and walk assist is disabled. You are left pedalling a heavy unassisted bicycle until the fault clears.

Likely causes
- Corroded or loose connector at the pedal force sensor where it plugs into the frame or motor housing
- Water or mud ingress into the torque sensor after pressure washing or riding in heavy rain
- Damaged or pinched wiring harness between the bottom bracket and the motor
- Bent or pushed-in pins inside the sensor plug from a crash or rough handling
- Internal failure of the pedal force sensor itself
How to fix Brose error 73
- Switch off the system completely using the control panel power button and wait 30 seconds.
- Switch the system back on with the same button and check whether the code clears.
- If 73 returns, switch off again and remove the battery before inspecting any wiring.
- Locate the pedal force sensor plug near the bottom bracket or motor and check for moisture, green corrosion, or a half-fitted connector.
- Unplug the connector, dry any dampness with a cloth, and refit it firmly until it clicks home; do not use contact spray unless specified by the manufacturer.
- Refit the battery, switch the system on, and test ride briefly on flat ground.
- If the code returns, stop riding and book the bike in with an authorised dealer for diagnosis and sensor or harness replacement.
Warranty: A genuine internal failure of the pedal force sensor or its wiring inside the two-year statutory warranty period is normally covered for parts and labour, while water ingress from pressure washing, crash damage, and corrosion from lack of cleaning are treated as owner responsibility.
Typical cost: Expect €120–€220 for a pedal force sensor replacement including diagnostic time, rising to €250–€400 if the complete bottom bracket harness or motor-side connector needs replacement.
Frequently asked
Can I reset brose error 73?
Yes, switch the system off using the control panel button, wait about 30 seconds, and switch it back on. If the code reappears as soon as you pedal, the pedal force sensor fault is still present and a deeper reset will not fix it.
Is it safe to keep riding with this error?
No, the motor cuts all assistance and walk assist is disabled, so on hills or in traffic you are effectively riding a heavy unassisted bike. Ride only the short distance home or to a workshop, then stop using electric mode.
How much will the dealer repair cost and is it under warranty?
Out of warranty a pedal force sensor replacement typically runs €120–€220 fitted, while a full harness job can reach €250–€400. If the sensor failed without water or impact inside the two-year warranty window, the manufacturer usually covers both parts and labour.
