Brose error 72: Motor not detecting pedal force input

Brose Drive (S, T, C - also used by Bulls, Rotwild, Fantic, BH, Trek Allant)Dealer neededRide with caution

The motor controller is not registering any force on the pedals, which means the internal torque sensor has either stopped reporting or is reporting a value the controller cannot use. As a result, the motor assist, walk assist and any torque-based power delivery switch off, and the bike behaves like an unpowered bicycle - heavier and slow on climbs, but still rideable. The display remains live for speed and battery information.

Likely causes

How to fix Brose error 72

  1. Stop the ride and switch off the system using the control panel button.
  2. Wait five seconds, then switch the system back on with the same button.
  3. Roll the bike forward a metre and pedal gently on flat ground to confirm whether assist has returned.
  4. Switch off again and inspect both cranks, pedals and the motor housing for visible damage, loose bolts or moisture.
  5. Check that the wiring loom exiting the motor at the bottom bracket is seated, dry and undamaged.
  6. If the code clears but reappears within one battery cycle, take the bike to an authorised Brose dealer for torque sensor diagnosis and replacement.
Go to a dealer if: The error returns after a full power cycle and a basic crank and wiring check, because the torque sensor requires dealer-level diagnostics and part replacement.
Warranty: A genuine torque sensor failure inside the two-year manufacturer warranty is normally treated as a component defect and covered; crash damage, water ingress from pressure washing and worn crank parts are typically excluded.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostics usually run €40-80, and a torque sensor or bottom bracket assembly replacement typically totals €150-320 including labour, depending on the bike brand and motor generation.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset Brose error 72 myself?

Yes. Hold or press the control panel button to switch the system fully off, wait at least five seconds, then power it back on. If the code clears and pedal assist returns, ride normally; if it reappears the torque sensor needs dealer service.

Is it safe to keep riding with error 72?

The motor assist will be cut off, so the bike rides like an unpowered bicycle - heavier but still usable on the flat. Get the fault diagnosed soon because you will have no assistance on climbs, into headwinds or with heavy loads.

How much does a Brose pedal force sensor repair cost?

A dealer diagnostic typically costs €40-80, and a torque sensor or bottom bracket replacement usually totals €150-320 including labour. On bikes under two years old with no crash or water damage, the repair is generally covered under warranty.
