Brose error 60: Brose Drive CAN bus communication fault
The system detected an interruption in the data exchange between the display, battery, motor and other components on the CAN bus. As a result the motor assist switches off, walk assist is disabled and the speed reading typically drops to zero or freezes. The bike still works as a normal unpowered bicycle but no electric support is available until the fault is cleared.
| Drive system | Brose Drive (S, T, C - also used by Bulls, Rotwild, Fantic, BH, Trek Allant) |
| Severity | Dealer needed |
| Keep riding? | Do not keep riding |
| Typical cost | Dealer diagnostic is typically 40-80 EUR, a replacement wiring harness 25-90 EUR, and a faulty display, battery interface or motor controller module 150-450 EUR depending on which brand the bike is badged under. |
Likely causes
- Loose, unseated or corroded connector at the display, battery, motor or speed sensor.
- Damaged CAN bus cable, often chafed near the head tube, under the down tube or at the motor exit.
- Water or dirt ingress into a plug or junction after riding in heavy rain or washing.
- Failing display, battery management board or motor controller sending corrupted data on the bus.
- Battery not fully clicked into its mount after removal or transport.
- Aftermarket lights, GPS trackers or chargers spliced into the wiring harness.
- After a crash or impact that disturbed a connector or cable run.
How to fix Brose error 60
- 1. Switch off the system and remove the battery. 2. Inspect every visible connector on the bike: display, battery, motor lead, speed sensor and any auxiliary port. 3. Unplug each connector one at a time, check the pins for bending, push-back, green corrosion or moisture, then reseat firmly. 4. Trace the cable run from display to motor and motor to battery, looking for chafing, kinks, crushed sections or signs of rodent damage. 5. Clean any corrosion with contact cleaner, dry fully and dielectric grease the connectors before reassembly. 6. Refit the battery, switch the system on and test assist. If the code clears, ride normally; if it returns within minutes, stop and book the bike in. 7. Take the bike to a Brose dealer so they can run the diagnostic tool and isolate which component is breaking the bus.
Warranty: A genuine internal CAN bus fault on a component within the two year Brose warranty period is normally covered, while crash damage, water ingress and connector corrosion from poor maintenance are usually excluded.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic is typically 40-80 EUR, a replacement wiring harness 25-90 EUR, and a faulty display, battery interface or motor controller module 150-450 EUR depending on which brand the bike is badged under.
Frequently asked
Can I reset brose error 60?
No. Power cycling the system or holding the power button does not clear error 60 because the fault is a detected communication interruption, not a stored user error. The underlying cause must be fixed, typically a loose connector or damaged cable, before the code disappears.
Is it safe to keep riding with this error?
No. With error 60 active the motor assist cuts out and walk assist is disabled, which is unsafe on climbs, in traffic or when carrying load where powered support is needed. The bike is rideable as an unpowered bicycle only and should be diagnosed before normal use.
What does the repair cost and is it under warranty?
Realistic repair cost is 40-450 EUR depending on whether it is a reseated cable, a replacement harness or a full display or motor controller module. Genuine component failure inside the two year warranty window is usually covered, but water damage, crash damage and corroded connectors from poor care are not.
