Which drive system does my VanMoof e-bike use?
VanMoof fits its own front or rear hub motor systems to its e-bikes; there is no third-party drive unit on board. The badge on the frame is a model label, not a motor brand, so it does not determine the error codes a rider sees. Faults are reported through the VanMoof app rather than a conventional handlebar display. To work out the system, the rider should check the motor position, the display style fitted, and what the VanMoof app identifies on this frame.
How to check on your own bike
- Locate the motor by lifting the bike and turning each wheel: resistance at the front wheel means a front hub motor, resistance at the rear means a rear hub motor.
- Read the markings stamped on the frame, the type plate under the bottom bracket, or the serial-number sticker, and note the VanMoof model name.
- Open the VanMoof app that pairs with the bike and read the firmware version, paired model, and any motor identification shown in settings.
- Identify which display the bike uses, such as the top-tube Matrix Display on newer models or the earlier handlebar-mounted display, as fault readouts differ between them.
- Cross-check the motor position, display type, and app pairing against the original invoice or order confirmation to confirm the build.
- Record any fault code or message the app shows before contacting VanMoof support.
Recalls involving VanMoof
| 2017-05-15 | VanMoof Recalls Bicycles Due to Fall and Impact Hazards The front fender bolts do not break when an object gets stuck between the front tire and the front fender/mud guard, posing fall and impact hazards. |
A recall on this list does not mean your bike is affected: check the model and the production dates in the official notice. This list combines the EU Safety Gate, the European Commission rapid alert system, with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. A model can be sold under another name in another market, so always check the model and production dates in the official notice.
Frequently asked
Which motor does VanMoof use?
VanMoof uses its own front or rear hub motors, developed in-house. There is no separate motor brand badge on the bike.
Does my VanMoof have a Bosch, Shimano, or Yamaha motor?
No. VanMoof e-bikes use VanMoof-designed hub motors and do not carry third-party drive units from Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, or other suppliers.
Where do VanMoof error codes appear?
VanMoof reports faults through its companion app rather than a conventional handlebar display, so the app's fault log or status screen is the first place to look.
