Shimano STEPS error E044: Drive system configuration error

Shimano STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP801)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

E044 means the drive unit has detected that the system configuration is not valid, usually because components are not paired correctly or the firmware versions do not line up. As a result the motor disables assistance and walk assist is unavailable, leaving the bike to roll on rider input only. The display may show no other faults even though the bike is essentially locked out of powered mode.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E044

  1. Switch off the system and remove the battery from the frame.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds, then refit the battery and switch the system back on.
  3. Note any other active codes shown on the display before they clear.
  4. Inspect the battery and drive unit connectors for dirt, moisture, or bent pins; clean and reseat if needed.
  5. Connect the bike to a PC running E-TUBE PROJECT and run a system diagnostic to read the configuration log.
  6. If a firmware update is offered, apply it through E-TUBE PROJECT following the on-screen steps.
  7. Take the bike to an authorised Shimano dealer so the system configuration can be verified and corrected in E-TUBE PROJECT.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is needed as soon as a power cycle does not clear the code, because E-TUBE PROJECT access at dealer level is required to read the configuration log and rewrite the pairing.
Warranty: A genuine configuration fault traced to a Shimano component within two years of purchase is normally covered, while crash damage, water ingress, or installation of non-genuine parts is excluded.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic and firmware update using E-TUBE PROJECT typically runs €40 to €90, with no parts required unless a non-conforming component has to be replaced.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset shimano error E044?

A power cycle clears the code only if the configuration has self-recovered in the meantime. The code returns on the next start until a dealer rewrites the configuration in E-TUBE PROJECT, so a reset on its own is not a fix.

Is it safe to keep riding with E044?

No. With E044 active the drive unit disables motor assist, so the bike rolls only on rider input like an unpowered bicycle. Limit use to the shortest possible ride to a safe spot or to the dealer.

Will Shimano cover E044 under warranty?

If a genuine Shimano component is at fault and the bike is within the two-year warranty window, Shimano covers the diagnostic and any replacement part at no cost. If the code is traced to a non-genuine accessory, water damage, or a crash, the repair is charged to the owner.
