Shimano STEPS error E022: Battery not recognized by drive unit
The drive unit has detected that the attached battery does not match Shimano's defined system standards, which is why E022 is shown on the display. Assist, walk assist and all other powered functions shut down and the bike will not run on electric power until the condition is cleared. The display continues to show the code and the system does not reset by switching off and on. Riding on this error risks further component damage and leaves you without powered assistance.

Likely causes
- Non-genuine or aftermarket battery fitted to the system
- Genuine Shimano battery model not listed as compatible with the fitted drive unit
- Battery firmware version out of step with the drive unit firmware after an update
- Damaged, bent or corroded battery mount pins preventing the ID handshake
- Faulty authentication chip inside the battery pack
- Repacked cells or replaced BMS with non-OEM hardware
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E022
- Stop riding and switch the system off at the display.
- Remove the battery and read the model number on the label (for example BT-E6000, BT-E8010, BT-EN805).
- Cross-check that model against the Shimano compatibility chart for your specific drive unit.
- Inspect the battery contacts and the mount connector on the frame; clean with isopropyl alcohol if dull, dirty or oxidised, and straighten any lightly bent pins with care.
- Reseat the battery fully until the click engages, then power the system on to see if E022 clears.
- If a second known-good Shimano battery is available, fit it to confirm whether the battery or the bike is at fault.
- Take the bike to an authorised Shimano dealer if the code returns with a confirmed genuine, compatible battery, because the drive unit or battery management board then needs dealer-level diagnostics.
Warranty: A genuine Shimano battery or drive unit that fails inside the two-year warranty period is normally replaced at no cost, while non-genuine batteries, water ingress, crash damage and modifications are excluded.

Frequently asked
Can I reset Shimano error E022?
Switching the system off and on will not clear E022 because the drive unit is refusing the battery on hardware identity grounds. The code only clears once a genuine, supported Shimano battery is fitted and the system is power-cycled. If the code returns with a verified compatible battery, a dealer must diagnose it.
Is it safe to keep riding with E022?
No. All assist, including walk assist, is shut off and the bike behaves like an unpowered bicycle, which can be dangerous on hills or in traffic. Continued riding also risks the drive unit logging further faults on top of E022.
Will Shimano cover E022 under warranty?
If a genuine Shimano battery is at fault within two years of purchase, Shimano normally covers replacement or repair at no cost. Non-genuine batteries, crash damage, water ingress and tampering are not covered, and the owner is then responsible for parts and labour.
