Mahle X35 / X20 assist cut-off (25 km/h EU, 20 mph US) and why it cannot be changed by the rider

Mahle X35 / X20 (iWoc button, My SmartBike app)

Mahle drives are set per market: 25 km/h in the EU, 20 mph (class 1) or 28 mph (class 3) in the US. The rider app has no speed setting; a dealer can only change it within the bike's type approval.

Step by step

  1. Check the setting: My SmartBike > bike > 'Info' shows the max assist speed.
  2. Confirm on a ride; the motor fades out over the last 2 km/h before the limit.
  3. A change (import from US to EU or the reverse) is done by a Mahle dealer with the service tool.
  4. Do not use a tuning dongle; the X20 detects implausible speed and stores an error, which voids the warranty.
Tip: The X35 has almost no drag above 25 km/h, so a road bike with X35 rides like a normal bike above the limit.

Can't find it?

There is no speed setting in the rider app on any version.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
