Adjusting the backlight on a Bafang C961 / C965

Bafang C961 / C965 (older BBS displays)

Backlight is the first item in the settings list, 1 to 5.

Step by step

  1. Switch on, then hold + and − (up and down on the C961) together for about 2 seconds until the settings screen appears.
  2. Backlight flashes first. Set 1–5 with + / −.
  3. Press power to move on; continue to Exit or hold power 1 second to save.
  4. Hold + for 2 seconds on the riding screen to toggle the light / night dimming.
Tip: The C961's LCD is transflective and readable without backlight in daylight; use level 1 by day and rely on night mode.

Can't find it?

If the backlight is on but the digits are faint, the contrast has drifted with temperature; it is an old display and there is no contrast setting. Warm it up or replace.

Frequently asked

Does 5 drain the battery?

Less than 1 W.

Backlight never comes on?

Check the light toggle (hold +); if the icon appears and the panel stays dark the LED strip is dead.

C965 has 10 %–100 % instead of 1–5?

Newer firmware, same setting.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
