VanMoof not charging: charger LED, halo ring and charge port checks
VanMoof bikes have no removable battery, so every charge goes through the frame port under the down tube, and the bike reports charging through the halo rings and the app instead of a battery gauge. This flow separates a dead charger from a blocked port and from a bike that refuses charge.
What you need
- The VanMoof charger (S3/X3: 4 A with round plug and LED; S5/A5: 4 A with the newer keyed plug and LED)
- The VanMoof app on your phone, connected to the bike over Bluetooth
- A known-good wall socket
- A torch to look into the frame charge port
LED patterns and what they mean
| Charger LED off on mains, nothing connected | No mains or the charger has failed. VanMoof chargers show a standby light. |
| Charger LED steady green, not connected | Standby. Normal. |
| Charger LED red or orange, connected | Charging. |
| Charger LED green, connected, bike not full | Bike not accepting charge: plug not seated, port fault, or the bike's charge controller has refused (temperature or protection). |
| Charger LED blinking | Fault: temperature, short, or communication error. Unplug both ends, wait 30 seconds, retry once. |
| Halo rings (S3/X3): animate/fill while charging | Bike is charging. The rings show state of charge for a few seconds after plugging in, then sleep. |
| Halo rings (S5/A5): brief animation on connect | Charge accepted. No animation at all on connect means the bike did not detect the charger. |
| Halo rings flash red or the app shows an error | Bike-side fault. The app's error text is your next clue. |
Step by step
Lamp test the socket. Plug the charger in with nothing connected; look for the standby LED.
If OK: Go to step 2.
If not: Dark on a live socket: verdict charger.
Torch into the port under the down tube. Look for water, sand, corrosion, bent or recessed pins, and a cracked rubber flap.
If OK: Clean and dry: go to step 3.
If not: Wet: dry it (compressed air, then 30 minutes indoors). Corroded or bent: verdict bike, port repair.
Plug the charger in until it seats (S5/A5: the plug is keyed, align it). Within seconds the halo rings should animate.
If OK: Rings animate, charger LED goes red: charging works. If it stops early, see the 'charging stops early' flow; VanMoof caps at 80 percent by default when the option is on.
If not: No animation: go to step 4.
Press the button on the top tube or unlock via the app, then reseat the charger plug.
If OK: Now animates: the bike was asleep and missed the connect. Normal on older firmware.
If not: Still nothing: go to step 5.
Open the VanMoof app, connect, and look at the battery page and any error banner. Note the battery percentage and temperature if shown.
If OK: App shows charging: the rings are the fault (cosmetic), not the charging. Nothing more to do.
If not: App shows an error or a temperature warning: bring the bike indoors for two hours if cold or hot. A persisting error is verdict bike; send the error text to VanMoof support.
In the app's battery settings, look for the charge limit option.
If OK: Off, or set to 100: go to step 7.
If not: On: that explains 'never reaches 100'. Nothing broken.
Another owner, a VanMoof service point, or a certified repair partner. Same generation plug.
If OK: Charges on the other charger: verdict charger.
If not: Same fault on a good charger: verdict bike.
With the charger connected, rock the plug gently and watch the charger LED and rings.
If OK: No change: plug and port are fine.
If not: Flickers between green and red: worn charger plug or a loose port. If the same happens with a known-good charger, verdict bike port.
What you now know for sure
- Charger: Bike charges on another VanMoof charger. → Replace with the matching generation VanMoof charger only. Third-party chargers with the same plug exist; the bike's charge controller may refuse them and you lose any warranty argument.
- Charge port: Wet, corroded, bent pins, or intermittent on wiggle with a good charger. → Port replacement by a VanMoof service point or certified partner. Keep the flap closed and never pressure-wash the down tube.
- Bike refuses charge: App error, temperature lockout, or internal battery protection. → Temperature clears indoors. A persistent error is service work; the app error text is the ticket.
- Setting, not a fault: 80 percent charge limit enabled. → Switch it off before long rides; leave it on for daily use, it is good for the cells.

Frequently asked
The halo rings do not light when I plug in. Is the battery dead?
Check the app first. The rings sleep and on some firmware only animate when the bike is awake. If the app reports charging, the battery is fine. If the app shows nothing and the charger stays green, work through the port and known-good-charger steps.
Can I use a different 42 V charger with the same plug?
It may work, but the bike's charge controller checks the charger and can refuse it, and any port or battery damage afterwards is on you. Use the VanMoof charger.
Where do I get a VanMoof charger now?
VanMoof service points and certified repair partners still supply chargers for S3/X3 and S5/A5. Check the plug generation: S3/X3 and S5/A5 chargers are not interchangeable without an adapter.
