Bosch classic (BES2) reset: every option, mildest first

ResetsBosch (BES2 classic: Purion, Intuvia, Kiox)

Bosch's classic system (Active Line, Performance Line, CX up to model year 2021) has no user factory reset. What you can do: a power cycle, a display settings reset and unpairing from eBike Connect. Error codes such as 500 and 503 live in the drive unit and can only be read and cleared with the dealer's DiagnosticTool.

Warning: Do not keep power-cycling a Bosch drive that shows 500, 503, 510 or 511. These are drive unit faults; each restart is logged and none of them fixes the cause. The total odometer is stored in the drive unit and cannot be reset by you or a dealer. Any display reset only touches the display.

What you need

Step by step

1. Soft reset: display off and on
Press the power button on the display (Purion: left button; Intuvia: top button; Kiox: button on the top edge). Wait 5 seconds, switch on again.
If OK: Error text gone and the bike assists: transient communication error. Ride on.
If not: Same code: continue with a full power cycle.
2. Full power cycle: battery out for 10 seconds or more
Switch off, unlock and remove the battery. Wait at least 10 seconds (Bosch's figure), 30 seconds is better. Refit until it locks, switch on. On an Intuvia or Kiox also lift the display off its holder for a few seconds so it drops its own supply.
If OK: Bike boots clean. If it was a one-off (for instance error 410 or 414 after a display was knocked), you are done.
If not: Error persists: it is an active fault. Read the code on the display and go to the Bosch error code page for that number before doing anything else.
3. Display settings reset: Purion
Hold the − button for about 1 second to open the settings menu. Step through with + / −. There is no factory reset item; you can only reset the trip ('Trip reset'), change km/mi and wheel size, and see the firmware version. Hold − again to leave.
If OK: Trip counter zeroed, units corrected. That is the extent of a Purion reset.
If not: The Purion cannot reset anything else. A frozen or blank Purion: check the two contacts on the back and the cable to the drive unit; a dealer can re-flash it.
4. Display settings reset: Intuvia
Hold the 'i' button on the display for about 1 second to enter the settings. Items include language, units, time, wheel circumference and shift recommendation. Use 'Reset' on the control unit for trip values ('Trip' and 'Trip time'). There is no full factory reset.
If OK: Language and units back to normal, trip reset. Odometer ('Total') is untouched by design.
If not: Intuvia shows garbage, does not react or restarts: contacts on the holder (clean with contact spray) or the display itself. A dealer can test it with a known-good display.
5. Display settings reset: Kiox (BES2, BUI330)
Open Settings from the status screen (press the select button). Under 'System settings' you find language, units, brightness and on later firmware 'Reset settings' / 'Restore factory settings' for the display only. Confirm. The Kiox restarts.
If OK: Display back to delivery state. The Kiox backup battery, activity data and Bluetooth pairing may need to be redone.
If not: Nothing changes or the Kiox loops on the Bosch logo: firmware or hardware. Dealer with DiagnosticTool for a firmware re-flash.
6. Unpair from eBike Connect (Kiox, Nyon)
On the display: Settings › Connections › Bluetooth, forget the phone. In the eBike Connect app: Profile › My eBikes › remove the bike. On the phone: Bluetooth settings › forget 'Kiox' / 'Nyon'. Then pair again from the display. Note that Bosch has been winding down eBike Connect in favour of Flow; check that the service still accepts new pairings.
If OK: Pairing works again; ride data syncs.
If not: Still no connection: the display's Bluetooth module or an old app version. Update the app; if the service is being retired, the display still works fully without it.
7. What 'resetting' error 500 or 503 really means
500 is an internal drive unit fault, 503 a gyroscope / sensor fault in the drive unit. A power cycle can make them disappear for a ride, but they are stored in the drive unit's error memory. There is no user command to clear them. Clearing is done by a dealer with DiagnosticTool after the cause has been checked (loose motor cable, water in the connector, damaged drive unit).
If OK: You accepted that this is a dealer visit and wrote the code down. That saves the dealer time.
If not: Someone offers to 'reset' the code with a cheap tool: refuse. The fault stays, only the warning is silenced, and the drive unit may fail on the road.
8. Dealer: DiagnosticTool error memory and service reset
The dealer connects the Bosch DiagnosticTool via the charge port or the display holder, reads the error log (with timestamps and odometer), clears it after repair, resets service intervals, updates firmware and can re-pair a replacement display or battery.
If OK: Log read, cause fixed, memory cleared. Ask for the printout: it helps if the fault returns.
If not: Dealer clears the memory without a repair and the code returns: the component is faulty and the log now shows a fresh instance. Time to talk warranty or replacement.

Frequently asked

Is there a Bosch factory reset I can do myself?

Not on the classic system. Purion and Intuvia have no reset beyond the trip counter and units; Kiox and Nyon can reset their own display settings. The drive unit and battery can only be reset by a dealer with DiagnosticTool.

Can the Bosch odometer be reset?

No. Total distance is stored in the drive unit and is read-only for owners and dealers. A replacement drive unit starts at zero, which is why service documents note the old reading.

Will a dealer clear error 500 for me without repairing anything?

A good dealer will not. Clearing an active drive unit fault hides a problem that can strand you. They will read the log, find the cause (often a cable or connector, sometimes the drive unit itself) and clear the memory after the repair.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
